Asminah – as an Infant

Asminah – After Surgery

This is an awesome story about a changed life.

Asminah is a one-year old girl who was born with a cleft lip and palate (see photo of her as an infant). She was brought to the clinic on the island of Halmahera where the extents of her injuries were assessed. The team led by Esther Scarborough arranged for her to go to Australia to repair her cleft lip and rebuild her face. She is the most recent child that IFC/Hohidiai has sent out of country to get medical help. She has a good prognosis according to Dr. David David of the Australian Craniofacial unit at the Royal Woman’s Hospital in Adelaide.

The team at Royal Woman’s Hospital did a great job (see photo after surgery). Asminah’s family is so pleased to see the change in her appearance. I can only imagine what this will mean for her future. She is back in Indonesia and will soon be in her village. This took a lot of work—passports—visas—translators—transportation—medical team coordination—and hundreds of smaller mountains to move. It was all worth the effort to know this child will have a future.

Special thanks belongs to the IFC/Hohidiai team, Dr. David David and the staff at Royal Woman’s Hospital for the compassion shown to Asminah.

Thank you for remembering her in your prayers—now we can give thanks for Asminah’s miracle.
