Hard To Leave

I have been to the Hohidiai base on the island of Halmahera many times. The base has changed from 75 acres of jungle to the life changing station with three children’s homes, a clinic, hospital, leper rehabilitation, HIV/AIDS residential treatment, T.B. patient housing, food services and children everywhere. It is a place that brings hope for those who come asking for help. The message of hope is clear–no one is turned away. The poorest come asking for help and receive free compassionate care. The staff treat everyone regardless of ability to pay or religion–all people are served with the same respect and compassion.

I just spent three weeks on this base. I got the chance to help in the school classrooms. This was a highlight and I am so impressed with our staff and students. The hunger to learn is just unquenchable. My favorite place to go is the Tamariska–the dwelling place of kings. This is where the lepers live. I really felt like a part of their family.  This is where I would spend a good part of my time if I was there.  It was an honor to serve in the school and with the leper families.

It was hard leaving this time. I really wanted to stay and if my wife was on this team, I would likely still be at the Tamariska playing cards with my friend Hendrik. Maybe some time I will get to stay longer than just a three week trip.
